about

Slow Clinic is the solo performance and recording project of James Edward Armstrong. Combining improvised guitar-based drones and loops with field recordings and found sound, the Slow Clinic project aims to create a sense of time and place within the listening experience.

‘Over and Over, Until We Forget Where We Were’ is an attempt to capture and reimagine the healing process through repetition and sonic imperfection. The album was created during a single recording session in January 2020 using electric guitar, a reverb pedal, and a loop pedal. The tools used and signal chain order are of importance to understanding flawed nature of these recordings; placing an excessive reverb effect before a looping device cuts the reverb tail, causing audible ‘faults’ to be heard by the listener. The creative limitation does present itself frequently throughout this album as a representation of removing a sense of control often experienced during the healing process.

This album and its contents remained unnamed for quite some time. In order to give the album and individual tracks some form of identity, the first word, phrase, or memory that came to mind when listening from start to finish was noted. Some of the track titles refer to textural qualities within the music, and others represent a very specific memory when considering the process of healing. The album title, ‘Over and Over, Until We Forget Where We Were’, is a reflection on the use of repetition to heal and to transcend.

The four loops recorded to create the content of this album, once set, were further altered by reversing, playing back at half-speed, and further reversing. The process further emphasises fluctuations in pitch, timbre, and stereo placement that are brought into focus when played back.
