about

Alchemy 4 was created for the exhibition of the same name which took place in the old Cooperative Bank in Colchester, Essex 23rd April and 10th May 2014, curated by Slack Space. The work is made entirely of sounds found in the 30 room building and was installed as a loop playing on an in-car DVD player displaying subtitles describing the sounds heard.

Stuart Bowditch is a sound recordist, artist and musician from the East of England - his work is rooted in places and communities that exist on the fringes, both geographically and socially, with a particular interest in the sonic landscape, capturing overlooked and overheard noises and using sound as a documentative and creative medium.

Site responsive works have been installed at Landguard Fort, Rochester Riverside, Focal Point Gallery, Yarmonics Festival, Basildon Council Offices and performed at The Union Chapel, Fuse Gallery Bradford, Studio 3.03 and the Resonance FM studio.

Reviews:

'It's a lovely work...goes really well with the sound of the printers in my office!' - Wil Bolton

'Listen for the way that the sound of fire alarm bells, typically used in an entirely practical purpose, has been turned on its head in an oddly beautiful way.' Norman Records
